About Divers Alert Network
DAN is Divers Alert Network, the diving industry’s largest association dedicated to scuba diving safety. DAN Southern Africa has been serving scuba divers for 20 years, providing emergency assistance, medical information resources, educational opportunities and more. Whether you are just learning how to scuba dive or are a veteran of the sport, DAN has a great deal to offer you. DAN’s primary and most important mission is dive safety, and every one of DAN’s activities is dedicated to this purpose, from assisting divers in emergency situations to developing and implementing safety projects and programmes and furthering dive medicine and safety research. As a member you are connected to all these services and offerings from DAN, including 24/7/365 access to a network of specialist doctors to assist you in an emergency or with any diving medical queries you have, DAN’s latest news and research, DAN courses and seminars, emergency medical evacuation assistance and benefits for scuba diving accidents. One of DAN’s best-known resources is the 24-hour DAN Emergency Hotline, which stands ready every hour of the day to help scuba divers in need.
The DAN Southern Africa Hotline Service
DAN’s emergency and information hotline is staffed by medically trained diving professionals, our physicians, medics and emergency medical technicians are dedicated to providing assistance to divers in need. Our services include medical information, referrals and evacuation assistance. In addition, members benefit from medical support from international diving and hyperbaric physicians.
DAN's emergency hotline staff members are on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, to provide information, assist with care coordination and evacuation assistance. This number should also be used to access the DAN emergency evacuation benefits and services – even when the emergency is not related to diving. In case of an emergency you must contact the DAN-SA Hotline (please do not send an email in the event of an emergency). We cannot guarantee that you will have benefits if you did not arrange the treatment through the DAN-SA Hotline. Toll free from inside South Africa: 0800 020 111 (Please note toll free dialing only applies from a landline to landline within South Africa). Outside of South Africa: +27 (0) 828 10 60 10. If you have a diving medical query that isn’t an emergency, you can call the hotline during regular business hours and speak directly to one of our medical information specialists. You can also email your request to email@example.com
DAN Medical Disclaimer

DAN’s medical services are not a replacement for consultation by qualified medical personnel and this email and information service does not constitute a physician-patient relationship. You are solely responsible for your decision to obtain a medical assessment, evaluation and/or treatment from a qualified medical professional before making any decision about your health or the health of your family.
The DAN Travel Notice
When planning a dive trip DAN recommends completing a travel notification to ensure that our medical staff know when DAN members travel abroad, and to add this note on our Hotline system. With the information the DAN medical team will be able to ensure adequate planning for any potential evacuation procedures and advise you on the availability of appropriate treatment facilities where you will be diving. Please note that DAN membership is not insurance and is secondary to any other Insurance or medical aid you might have. The travel notification only applies to active DAN Southern Africa members.
Important: Please also note that there is a limitation on DAN Membership benefits – especially for remote and complicated evacuations. It is always advisable to take additional comprehensive travel insurance in conjunction with your DAN Membership to make up any possible shortfall in such cases.
